Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, along with Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and other senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were denied access to Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (popularly known as Chairman Wontumi) on Friday, May 30, 2025, by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB).

The visit, aimed at checking on Wontumi’s welfare, was blocked due to lack of authorisation from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which is leading the probe into alleged fraud, money laundering, and financial loss to the state.

“They claim until EOCO authorizes, we cannot see him,” Afenyo-Markin told journalists outside the NIB Ridge office.
“It’s worrying that someone would demand GH¢50 million for bail just for inquiry. This is a clear show of power.”

NIB officials informed the NPP delegation that Wontumi had been moved to their Kawukudi facility, not present at Ridge as expected. The relocation further deepened concerns about transparency and due process.

Dr. Bawumia also questioned the legitimacy of the GH¢50 million bail condition, describing it as prohibitive and unreasonable.

“How many Ghanaians have property worth GH¢50 million?” he asked.
“This looks like a move to keep him in custody rather than grant him fair bail terms.”

The legal team representing Wontumi has so far been unable to meet the bail requirement, while the NPP continues to explore legal alternatives to secure his release.

The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem Sai, previously revealed that ongoing investigations had linked Wontumi to an international organized crime syndicate, further complicating the case and fueling political speculation.

As the situation unfolds, tensions between the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition NPP are reaching new highs, with accusations of political persecution becoming central to the national debate.
